I agree 100%.  That's why I usually wait until the second half of the draft.  I usually don't take my first defensive player until round 13, and I still end up with a top 5 defense most seasons.  I may adapt that to get a few guys this year, but I will weigh it more on the availability and value, less on what my league mates are doing.
