Vincent Rey will be one of the IDPs I watch more closely this season.
Rey Maualuga has been on his way out in Cincinnati the last couple of years. It's kind of dumbfounding that's he is actually still on the team, let alone a starter.
Vincent Rey on the other hand showed flashes of brilliance when he got the opportunity to play. Anytime a guy puts up a 15 total tackles, 3 sacks, 3 TFLs, 3 PDs, and INT in one game, you have to take notice.
Rey actually led the NFL in tackle frequency recording a tackle on 16.7% of his defensive snaps (minimum of 300 snaps). There's likely to be some regression in that rate over an entire season, but it gives you an idea of what Rey is capable of if given the chance to play consistently. His overall value is a bit stunted due to Vontaze Burfict's presence, but we've seen a few instances across the NFL where we can have two upper-tier fantasy linebackers (e.g. Navorro Bowman & Patrick Willis, James Laurinaitis & Alec Ogletree).
My hope that with Paul Guenther (former Bengals linebacker coach) at the defensive helm now, that the team will realize they need to move away from Maualuga and give Rey the opportunity to prove himself. Only time will tell.
I will make sure to keep everyone updated on this situation and call out any key things I see.
