Every year I purchase the IDP Draft Guide and every year it is indispensable in my drafts.
This year I drafted in 5 IDP leagues on NFL.com. The leagues had many managers (16 and 20) and the rosters were around 30 players including Bench and IR.
The one bad thing when you consistently play in these types of leagues is that there are no mock drafts (or at least I can't find them) to really prepare you for the draft. This is why you need the Draft Guide to get ready.
Also, some of my leagues had 15 and 30 secs between picks and if you don't have your players ready to draft you are dead.
With these drafts of many teams/players, often there are a lot of no-shows and the computer does its Autopick thing. This is where you can again use the draft guide to your advantage. The computer will automatically pick players based on its list (I guess rank ordered according to pts last year or projected for this year). Often these lists are just terrible and the no-shows get some pretty lousy players. Also, there are some excellent players that are ignored such as those who were injured last year (like Sean Lee, for example) and the rookies that are just buried at the end of the list.
My strategy in each draft was to exclusively draft OFF players (not always DST or K though) first, even the Bench players before even going after IDP. Yes, I didn't get the big names like Watt, H. Smith, Kuechley, etc., but in every case there were plenty of top players rated in the teens (per the Guide) or lower left in the draft that I scooped up. Additionally, my OFF players including the Bench players were top-notch because I filled those spots first.
The only area I struggled with this year was that each league I played gave significant pts to Return men so I had to go hunting for OFF kickoff/punt guys and the rare IDP guys who are schedule to be involved in the kicking game. I should have asked the Guru for a little help there, but I ended up selecting guys like Pacman Jones, Micah Hyde, T Carrie, Sherels, and Bolden. While they have little IDP value, when you play in a league that gives 1 pt/4 return yds, you have to go with these guys. Or, focus on just OFF players who are return men.
So, a tip of my cap to the Guru for a fine Draft Guide again this year that helped me very much in my drafts!
PS I am neither a shill, nor was this a paid endorsement. ;-)
